As I look for a new job I am finding one thing that is harder than I though, Marketing myself.
I can get people to do and believe a lot of things. I can promote products and ideas. But when it comes to selling myself I am just not very good at it. Yes, my resume is okay. I have a lot of experience in the television. The problem is that I do not want to stay in television news. I would like to go into Marketing and PR. As we all know, that is all about selling things to other people. So how can I expect to be hired when I cannot even sell myself to them?
I know that the basic principle of job interviewing is to present yourself as an employer benefit, that is, sell yourself to the interviewer by tailoring your responses to meet the company’s needs.
The two problems I am running into right now are to much experience and answering that age old question, “where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?” Well, just because I have a lot of experience does not mean that I do not need a job. I still need to work and make money, just give me a chance, I am a hard worker.
The “where do you see yourself?” question is hard for me right now because I am not sure where I see myself. Happy is never a good answer. I want to go back to school and who knows, maybe I will find something I like better than TV, PR and marketing. I don’t think so, but the possibility is there.
Anyway, I better head out for another day of job hunting. There are lots of places that that need to see my application and resume, because if they do not, they will never know about me and I will never get hired.
