I learned a lesson yesterday, but I also found that the lesson has no immediate answers. I went to the credit union to get money out and put in my bank for rent. Once I deposited the money, More than a hundred dollars was put on a depost hold. I didn’t think much of it at first. But it was cash I deposited, so I started to wonder.
A quick call to the bank and I found out the IRS put a levy on my account. I had no idea what or why this was happening.
So, I decided to call the IRS. This call, unlike the one to the bank was not quick at all. The hold process itself is about 30-60 minutes. Then I was hung up on twice. I finally, a couple hours later, got someone that would talk to me.
Here is what I found out: in the years 2002 and 2003 my federal income tax returns were rejected. The IRS refiled them for me and now says I owe more than $4000. For some reason, the IRS decided not to tell me about any of this until now.
After about an hour of talking, arguing and not really understanding what was going on, the nice lady (as far as IRS people can be) said that I could refile the years and double check the years after to see if I could get refunds instead of owing money. They also said that the money taken out of my checking account would stay on hold until that process was finished, but would not take anymore money out of my account and if they were going to, they would tell me about it next time.
I wondered to the lady out loud how I was going to find my W-2’s, because these are things I was not sure I could find. Well, guess what? The IRS has all that on file and can order them and have them sent to you within a weeks time.
So in the end, I am still a hundred dollars short in rent money and it is December 4th. The IRS is trying to work with me (well, as much as the IRS can, they are all uptight there) and Wells Fargo charges $100 to process any levy on your account.
I will keep you upated on who my dealings with the IRS go in the future, until I get the information they are supposed to send me, I am going to try and not worry to much about it.
